Independent verification
A defining feature of the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning is its independent verification system. Verification helps ensure that the Charter's sustainability requirements are implemented consistently across participating companies and supports the credibility, transparency and robustness of the scheme.
For Charter members, independent verification provides assurance that participation is based on more than commitments alone. The Charter's company sustainability procedures, product standards and reporting requirements are subject to review by qualified third-party verifiers. This helps maintain a common and trusted sustainability framework across the European cleaning and hygiene products industry.
Verification is a cornerstone of the Charter's approach. As the Charter evolves beyond the use of sustainability logos, independent verification and transparent performance reporting remain key mechanisms through which companies can demonstrate their commitment to continuous sustainability improvement.
What do Charter verifiers do?
Accepted Charter verifiers are independent organisations authorised to assess compliance with Charter requirements. Their role includes:
Carrying out entrance checks for new Charter members
Reviewing the implementation of Charter Sustainability Procedures (CSPs)
Conducting assessments related to Advanced Sustainability Profiles (ASPs), where applicable
Supporting the integrity and consistency of the Charter's verification process
Helping ensure that Charter participation is underpinned by objective and independently assessed evidence.
Through these activities, verifiers contribute to maintaining the credibility and reliability of the Charter framework for members, customers, retailers, value-chain partners and public authorities.

Become an accepted verifier
The Charter welcomes applications from suitably qualified organisations interested in becoming accepted verifiers. Accepted verifiers play an important role in supporting the implementation and credibility of the Charter by carrying out independent assessments of participating companies and products against Charter requirements.
