The scope of Charter membership

The Charter is open to all companies placing cleaning and maintenance products on the market. Charter membership does not require membership of Detergents Europe or its national associations. The Charter covers detergents and maintenance products for household and for professional industrial and institutional use.

Membership is relevant both to manufacturing companies placing products directly on the market, including private label manufacturers, and retailers and distributors of products manufactured by Charter members, i.e. manufacturing companies that are Charter members.

Manufacturers join as ‘Ordinary Members’ and go through a verification entrance check – Charter eligibility requires implementation of essential CSPs, and a commitment to implementing additional CSPs within three years. Retailers and distributors join as ‘Associate Members’ without needing to undergo CSP and entrance checks but with a commitment to the rules of the scheme and ensuring that their producers are ordinary Charter members.

Why join the Charter?

Demonstrate credible sustainability leadership

The Charter enables companies to demonstrate their commitment to continuous sustainability improvement through independently verified standards and transparent reporting. Participation provides a recognised framework for communicating sustainability performance to customers, retailers, value-chain partners and public authorities.

Join an industry-wide sustainability framework

Become part of a community of around 170 participating companies representing most of the European cleaning and hygiene products market. The Charter provides a common industry approach to sustainability practices and reporting.

Benefit from independent verification

The Charter is distinguished by its third-party verification model. Independent verification helps strengthen the credibility, consistency and robustness of sustainability processes and reporting.

Measure and track progress

Participating companies contribute to annual KPI reporting that has documented more than two decades of sustainability progress across the sector. The reporting framework enables companies to measure and benchmark improvements over time.

Future-proof your sustainability journey

The Charter is designed as a living framework that evolves with scientific developments, changing sustainability priorities and the regulatory environment.

Contribute to collective impact

Through participation in the Charter, companies contribute to measurable industry-wide progress on climate impact, resource efficiency, packaging circularity, environmental protection and workplace safety
