Detergents Europe has been awarded the Best EU Public Affairs Campaign Award 2026 at the Best in Brussels Awards for its “Hands Up for Ethanol” campaign.
The campaign was launched to support the continued availability of ethanol, an essential ingredient used in disinfectant products that help protect public health across Europe.
Over a period of two months, the initiative brought together more than 1,200 signatories from all EU Member States and over 20 sectors, including scientists, healthcare professionals, industry representatives and other stakeholders. Through coordinated advocacy and clear communication, the campaign highlighted the importance of ensuring that regulatory decisions relating to ethanol are based on scientific evidence and real-world use conditions. The campaign contributed to discussions on the future regulatory framework for ethanol and the role it plays in infection prevention and hygiene. The final outcome took into account scientific evidence and real-world exposure, helping to ensure the continued availability of essential disinfectant products.
The award recognises the collective effort behind the campaign. National Associations, member companies and the Detergents Europe team worked together to raise awareness of the issue across Europe and engage with policymakers and stakeholders throughout the process. This recognition reflects the strength of a coordinated European approach and the value of bringing science, public health expertise and industry voices together around a common objective. We would like to thank our members, National Associations, and all those who contributed their expertise and support throughout the initiative. Special thanks also go to Fourtold for its partnership during the campaign. Thanks also to the Best in Brussels Awards jury, Dober Partners and the organisers for recognising the campaign and its contribution to evidence-based policymaking.
While the award marks an important milestone, Detergents Europe will continue to advocate for a strong, science-based regulatory framework for ethanol and other substances that play an important role in protecting health and hygiene across Europe.
