How does DetNet work?
DetNet: supporting science-based classification of detergents and cleaning products
DetNet combines scientific data, expert assessment and a documented process to support classification decisions.
It does not automatically generate classifications; it provides potentially relevant information that trained experts assess using the DetNet approach.
The DetNet process
- STEP 1: Sign up to join and pay your subscription fee. Nominate your classification expert(s)
- STEP 2: Get log in details and access the secure website
- STEP 3: Input mixture to be classified and search in the DetNet database. System presents possible matching formulations.
- STEP 4: Expert determines if it is possible to derive the classification of the untested mixture by comparison with tested 'Reference Formulations and applying ‘CLP bridging principles’
- STEP 5: If can apply bridging principle(s), follow onscreen instructions to document your classification decision. Download and store final record classification
- STEP 6: Label your mixture for skin and eye effects (other hazards may also be covered). Update your Safety Data Sheet (SDS) accordingly
The DetNet database
Scientific Advisory Panel
The DetNet database includes ca. 200 formulations ('Reference Formulations'), covering a wide range of market relevant mixtures, each supported by skin and/or eye toxicological test data, either historical in vivo or data generated using in vitro methods.
Reference Formulation information is provided in a format that enables comparison and application of the relevant classification principles while protecting confidential business information.
The Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) comprises recognised independent experts in the fields of toxicology, dermatology or ophthalmology who worked with Detergents Europe to ensure that DetNet is a robust and relevant means of correctly classify detergent and cleaning products.
SAP members acted and decided independently and solely on the basis of scientific considerations, under full confidentiality.
The role of the SAP under DetNet was to provide advice to Detergents Europe on the scientific approach, toxicological assessment, clinical experience and generation of reliable data (for classification purposes).
Confidentiality and security
Protecting confidential business information is a core element of DetNet. Access is restricted to authorized experts operating under confidentiality agreements and secure access procedures.
Company-specific formulation information is protected throughout the classification process. Access to the restricted area is personal, confidential and non-transferable.
Transparency and documentation
DetNet supports transparent and well-documented classification decisions. Companies are responsible for maintaining classification records and making relevant information available to competent authorities where required by applicable rules.
What is DetNet?
Developed by Detergents Europe (formerly A.I.S.E.) and its network of National Associations, in dialogue with stakeholders, DetNet (Detergent Industry Network for CLP Classification) provides access to shared toxicological data, scientific expertise and a harmonized classification approach for the detergents and cleaning products sector in compliance with the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Experts
DetNet can only be used by approved experts nominated by a subscribing company.
Experts may be company employees or consultants acting on behalf of the company.
Join DetNet
DetNet membership is available to companies responsible for the classification and labelling of detergents and cleaning products placed on the European market. This includes manufacturers, importers and retailers that meet the relevant subscription criteria.
