DetNet: supporting science-based classification of detergents and cleaning products
The Detergent Industry Network for CLP Classification (DetNet) is a platform that helps detergents manufacturers to classify and label their products in accordance with the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation in order to comply with the requirements.
Developed by Detergents Europe (formerly A.I.S.E.) and its network of National Associations, in dialogue with stakeholders, DetNet provides access to shared toxicological data, scientific expertise and a harmonized classification approach for the detergents and cleaning products sector in compliance with the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
DetNet helps qualified experts assess formulations using available scientific evidence and established classification principles.
Since it was launched in 2013, DetNet incudes data on nearly 2000 classified mixtures.
Whilst DetNet is a service proposed specifically for CLP Classification, Detergents Europe reminds that each company placing products on the market is responsible for the final classification.

Why DetNet?
Scientific foundation
DetNet reflects the collective scientific expertise of the detergents and cleaning products sector. By facilitating the sharing of data and knowledge within a secure framework, it supports consistent and scientifically robust classification practices across the industry.
Under CLP, default calculation methods may lead to conservative classifications for some daily-use detergent and cleaning products. DetNet was developed to support a more refined, science-based assessment using shared data, expert judgement and CLP bridging principles, while maintaining each company’s responsibility for the final classification.
The system promotes a science-based approach to classification while supporting appropriate hazard communication and consumer understanding.
DetNet combines toxicological data, scientific expertise and established classification principles. The system is supported by an independent Scientific Advisory Panel and a database of Reference Formulations representing a wide range of detergent and cleaning product types.
Who can use DetNet?
DetNet is open to companies placing detergent and cleaning products on the EU market and responsible for classification and labelling. Participation is open to companies of all sizes, whether or not they are members of Detergents Europe or one of its National Associations.
Products in scope
The priority products for which DetNet is available are laundry detergents (liquids, powders), hand dish wash detergents and all-purpose cleaners (non-extreme pH products), for both consumer and professional use. DetNet Reference Formulations could also be used for other product types with similar chemistry (i.e. those based on surfactants, such as car wash products).
Other products with similar chemistry refer to product composition: for example, if a detergent for a different intended use has a similar composition to an all-purpose cleaner, DetNet can be of use. In other words, it is the composition of the mixture that matters, not the intended use or the product category.
DetNet can be used for both consumer and professional products. It supports classification for skin and eye irritation and corrosion endpoints. Other endpoints, other hazards of relevance under CLP must be assessed separately for each mixture by the company responsible for placing the product on the market.

The Members Area provides authorised users with secure access to the DetNet platform and supporting resources.
Access is restricted to approved experts from subscribing companies. Credentials are personal and should not be shared.

How does DetNet work?
DetNet combines scientific data, expert assessment and a documented process to support classification decisions.
It does not automatically generate classifications; it provides potentially relevant information that trained experts assess using the DetNet approach.
Experts
DetNet can only be used by approved experts nominated by a subscribing company.
Experts may be company employees or consultants acting on behalf of the company.
Join DetNet
DetNet membership is available to companies responsible for the classification and labelling of detergents and cleaning products placed on the European market. This includes manufacturers, importers and retailers that meet the relevant subscription criteria.
